For those of you who have been living in a cave, I’ll let you in on a little something, the most recent makeup craze. Using Nivea Men Post Shave Balm as a primer. I believe the hype surrounding this product erupted following NikkieTutorials – the ultimate beauty queen – claims that it worked well as a face primer. Before I went out to purchase it myself, I watched many reviews on YouTube to see how other people got on with it. In the end I decided to give it a go, even though I was still very sceptical of using a men’s skincare product on my face, as many others would be.
The ingredient in the product that is formulated as a priming base is the glycerin; it acts as a ‘glue’ for foundation, the same way as all other primers. I have noticed that when I use this as a primer, my makeup lasts a lot longer than usual and I don’t get oily/shiny throughout the day.
In reviews I had seen prior to purchasing this product, it said to work the balm into your skin until it felt tacky and then apply your foundation, so that is what I did. I found that my foundation applied like an absolute dream, so easy to blend, and my skin looked smooth and even. The formula is fairly runny but also creamy and smooth, which applies really nicely to fresh, clean skin. Despite what others think, I feel the scent of the balm isn’t too strong and actually smells quite nice and less ‘manly’ once applied. Another positive is that the bottle holds 100ml of product, which I know will last me ages as I will be using it alongside other primers.
I purchased this product from Superdrug for £5.29 – just a fraction of any other primer I own! It’s also available in Boots, Tesco and many other stores. In terms of longevity, I believed it worked better than any of my other primers. Overall, this product worked extremely well and exceeded expectations for staying power and smoothing out imperfections. Definitely worth a try if you struggle to keep your makeup in place throughout the day – don’t be put off by the fact that it says it’s for men!
Let me know if you have tried this and what you thought of it!
